For years, anyone who wanted to read a history of graphic design, written in English, had conspicuously few choices. It was either Philip Meggs’s trailblazing A History of Graphic Design
(1983, now in its fourth, posthumous edition) or Richard Hollis’s more compact Graphic Design: A Concise History
(1994). It took until 2006 for a heavyweight rival to Meggs to appear in English — French art historian Roxane Jubert’s Typography and Graphic Design: From Antiquity to the Present
