Real Space, Imaginary Stuff

Organizing a physical gallery show is harder, and more satisfying, than "curating" online. But the Web has its charms — a dynamic quality that can lead to unexpected future echoes. My attempts to give an exhibition on imagination and the marketplace similar potentials were trumped on opening night, by a surprise shopdropper.

Lulz and Pedagogy

Is it a waste of classroom time to show funny videos from the Internet? Not necessarily: When the lulz die down, there's often serious stuff to talk about. Here are some videos that I used that (sometimes) helped spark useful discussions of design as a pervasive, engaging, and important subject.

On Dapper Dan

Ever heard of Dapper Dan? If not, and you're interested in subcultural styles, he's worth knowing about. Infamous for his customized creations that brazenly appropriated luxury logos, he helped pioneer a remarkable visual-remix aesthetic that was part of the spectacular style of early rap culture.
